Agreed It on WhatsApp? How to Document a Verbal Agreement
A deal made in WhatsApp messages and voice notes, with no signed contract: how to find every message where the terms were set, confirm them in writing, and keep the conversation as an organised record.
You agreed the price, the deadline and what was included, all over WhatsApp. There’s no signed contract. Now the other side remembers it differently. The conversation is your record of what was said, so the job is to keep it complete and make it readable.
Where the terms usually are #
Deals made on WhatsApp are rarely in one message. Look for:
- the first offer and every counter-offer;
- voice notes where details were explained;
- photos of quotes, lists, sketches or products;
- payment messages: deposits, receipts, bank transfer screenshots;
- the “ok”, the thumbs-up, or “deal” that closed it;
- later messages that refer back to the deal (“as we agreed…”).
Step 1: export the whole chat #
Export with media so voice notes and photos come along (Android, iPhone). Keep the .zip unchanged, and don’t delete the chat from your phone.
Step 2: confirm the terms in writing (if you still can) #
If you’re still talking, send a short typed message in the same chat:
“Just to confirm what we agreed on 3 March: kitchen cabinets installed by 15 April, $12,000 total, $4,000 paid as deposit, rest on completion.”
Whatever the reply, it’s now in the conversation.
Step 3: build a list of key messages #
For each term, note the date, time, sender and page where it appears. A one-page list is much easier for someone else to follow than “it’s somewhere in March”.
Step 4: make the conversation readable #
A .zip of loose files isn’t something you can hand over. Zap2Doc turns the export into a chronological PDF: every message with its date and sender, photos in place, voice notes transcribed under each message, and numbered pages your list can point to. You can limit it to the period of the deal, and see a free preview before paying.
Next steps #
Whether the agreement holds, and how to pursue it, depends on your country and the amount: ask a lawyer, a consumer body or a small-claims service where you are. For collecting the rest of the material, see how to present a WhatsApp chat as evidence.
