What does Advanced chat privacy do?

It's a per-chat setting WhatsApp introduced in 2025. When it's on, nobody in that chat can export it, media isn't saved automatically to phones, and messages can't be used with Meta AI features.

In a private chat, either person. In a group, it follows the group's settings: if only admins can edit group settings, only an admin can change it.

Does it delete messages?

No. It only restricts what can be done with them. Once it's turned off, Export chat comes back for the whole conversation.

Where the Export chat option is in WhatsApp

Export chat has vanished from one conversation but still appears in the others. The most likely reason is Advanced chat privacy, a setting WhatsApp added in 2025 that blocks exports for everyone in that chat.

What the setting does #

When Advanced chat privacy is on in a chat:

No one can export it, on any phone.
Media is not saved automatically to participants’ phones.
Messages can’t be used with Meta AI features in that chat.

It is set per chat: turning it on in one conversation changes nothing in the others. It doesn’t delete anything, and it doesn’t stop screenshots.

How to check whether it’s on #

Open the chat and tap the contact or group name at the top.
Look for Advanced chat privacy in the list. It shows whether it’s on.
Scroll the chat itself: WhatsApp posts a notice in the conversation when someone turns it on or off, with that person’s name.

Who can turn it off #

Private chat: either of you. Turn it off yourself in the same place, and Export chat comes back.
Group: it depends on the group’s permissions. If only admins can edit group settings, ask an admin. Otherwise, any member can.

After it’s off, export as usual: Android or iPhone.

If it has to stay on #

Sometimes the person who turned it on won’t switch it off, or you are not an admin. In that case:

Ask someone who can. A group admin can turn it off, export, and turn it back on.
Ask for their export. Any participant can export once the setting is off; the file covers the same conversation.
Keep what you can see. Screenshots still work, but they’re a weak substitute: no searchable text, no voice notes and no reliable continuity between screens.

Other reasons the option disappears #
